Betel leaf (Piper betle L.) is the major cash crop of Bhanpura tehsil of Mandsaur district (M. P.), it is known as â??Paanâ?. Numerous ancient Indian literatures signify the importance of betel leaf in our social environment. Entire plant of betelvine has been used for both medicinal and traditional purpose. Many researchers found ethnopharmacological uses of betelvine, the fresh leaves juice and the essential oil have aromatic, carminative and astringent properties. Phenolic compounds of essential oil of betelvine are used in folk medicine in India and other Asian countries. Under controlled conditions it grows in a special type of hut like structure that is called panwari. Diseases, unsatisfactory marketing, insufficient transportation and storage facilities are the major threats in betel leaf cultivation. Intensive surveys were done in Bhanpura tehsil and collected information about agricultural practices and various diseases commonly found in the area. Foot rot, leaf rot, bacterial leaf spot, fungal leaf spot, yellow leaf, wilting etc. are common diseases of betelvine. Disease resistant varieties should be developed and recommended to local farmers. Present research studied the major threats of betelvine and recommendations for increase the yield of betel leaf.
